This is the original marble headstone which has been on the ground for a number of years. It was vertical in the 1980’s however, based on a photo in Andrew Hull Tuttle, 1775-1845, His Ancestry and Descendants, by Joyce Bruner Whitman.
The date of birth on the original stone is different from the one on the contemporary replacement. I believe that the contemporary stone’s date is based on the Whitman book.
The stone is now in extremely poor condition and is disintegrating into the ground. I removed as much soil and sod as I could before cleaning and treating it to hopefully prolong its life. His wife’s marker is in somewhat better condition.
Andrew’s headstone is on the bottom in this photo and the degradation is clearly visible. Marble does not survive long in the ground. The condition is too poor for any sort of repair.
Note: the modern granite stone was installed earlier than 2015, since it is visible in another photo on Find A Grave.
